William Proven was born in Galashiels, Scotland, on 13 January 1889. A Carpenter by occupation, and a former member of the Calgary Rifles (Militia), he enlisted in the 31st Battalion at Calgary in November 1914. Serving in France, he was wounded on 28 September 1916 at the battle of Thiepval Ridge - suffering a shrapnel wound to the head and large wound to the left thigh. Invalided to England, Sergeant Proven succumbed to his wounds on 7 March 1917. He was buried in St. Andrew’s and Jesmond Cemetery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne; sold with copied service and other papers.
