Private S. Watts, 4th (Militia) Battalion Derbyshire Regiment, was wounded at Roodeval, 7 June 1900. During the British advance north from Bloemfontein, a company of the 4th Battalion Derbyshire Regiment with a company of Railway Pioneers garrisoned Roodeval. On the night of 7 June 1900 they were attacked by a strong force of De Wet’s Commando which included four field guns. After a gallant but hopeless fight the British garrison was forced to surrender. In the action, the Derbyshires suffered 36 killed and 104 wounded. Those not wounded were taken prisoner. With copied roll extracts and other research. Watts also entitled to the clasp ‘South Africa 1901’.
