Alfred Soars was born in Nottingham. A Cordwainer by occupation, he attested for the 45th Regiment at Nottingham on 2 March 1839, aged 22 years. With the regiment he served in Gibraltar 1 year, 9 months; Monte Video, 10 months, and in the Cape of Good Hope, five years, 8 months. Served in the Third Kaffir War, 1850-53. Being considered unfit for further military service, he was discharged at Fort Napier, Natal on 27 April 1852. With copied discharge papers.
