James Robert Hamer was born in Blackburn, Lancashire, lived in Radcliffe and enlisted into the Lancashire Fusiliers at Bury on 24 September 1898. Posted to the 3rd Battalion, he went to Malta in about January 1899. Joining the Mounted Infantry section, he left Malta for South Africa in February 1901, as part of the Malta Mounted Infantry Company, which formed part of the 9th Battalion Mounted Infantry.

Still serving with the Lancashire Fusiliers he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 4 December 1914. With the 2nd Battalion, he was killed in action, France/Flanders, on 26 March 1915. The War Diary records that he was killed by a sniper. Hamer was buried in the Tancrez Farm Cemetery, Belgium.
