Frances Ethel Astell was born in Handsworth, Staffordshire on 9 July 1878. As a Nursing Sister in the Territorial Force Nursing Service she entered the Salonika theatre of war on 9 January 1917. She died of disease in Macedonia on 17 December 1917 and was buried in the Mikra British Cemetery, Kalamaria. She was the daughter of Mrs M. J. Astell, of 187 Queen’s Road, Norwich. With a copy of the recipient’s birth and death certificates and other copied research including m.i.c. which shows entitlement to the Victory Medal.
