William Saunderson Hooker, alias William Saunderson was born in Linwood, Lincolnshire. A Carman by occupation, he attested for the Royal Artillery at Woolwich on 14 July 1881, aged 24 years, 5 months. With the R.F.A. he served in India, December 1881-November 1890 and South Africa, October 1899-March 1902. Suffered a scalp wound at home on 4 August 1891. Serving with the 66th Battery R.F.A. in South Africa, the unit was heavily involved in the battle of Colenso. Discharged as medically unfit on 30 June 1902.
