William Horton was born in Clatpole, Newark, Nottinghamshire. A Waiter by occupation and a member of the 4th Battalion Sherwood Foresters, he attested for full-time service at Derby on 10 November 1893, aged 18 years, 9 months. With the Derby Regiment he served in India, February 1896-November 1898; Malta, November 1898-November 1899; and South Africa, November 1899-September 1902. Transferred to the Army Reserve in December 1902 and discharged on 9 November 1909. With copied service papers and roll extracts.
