British Empire Medal, (Civil) G.V.R. (Gilbert Roscoe Saville), very fine £400-500

B.E.M. London Gazette 3 June 1932:

‘For services in connection with the capture of an armed burglar at Whitfield, near Bury, Lancashire.’

Local newspaper sources reveal that Saville investigated a break-in and was confronted by George Edwards, a known London criminal. The latter was armed and shot at him, before also opening fire on Sergeant Collins and Police Constable Welch of the Lancashire Constabulary. However, no injuries were incurred and Edwards was later apprehended.
