Alexander William McPherson was born in Macduff in 1887. He was educated at Macduff and Edinburgh University. As an Officer Cadet he was appointed a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Garrison Artillery (Special Reserve of Officers) (London Gazette 28 September 1917). He served in France and Belgium, November 1917-April 1918 and was twice wounded. Promoted to Lieutenant in March 1919, he relinquished his commission in April 1920. In July 1920 he was appointed a Captain in 1st Highland Medium Brigade, R.G.A. (T.F.) and was promoted to Major in the 56th (HIghland) Medium Brigade, R.G.A. (T.A.) in May 1923, Lieutenant-Colonel in July 1929; and Brevet Colonel in July 1933. Colonel McPherson retired in July 1934 but was appointed Hon. Colonel of the 56th Brigade in May 1935. He was awarded the Efficiency Decoration in 1939 (London Gazette 28 March 1939). McPherson was variously Town Clerk of Macduff; Agent for the Bank of Scotland; Director of the London and Lancashire Insurance Company; and President of the Society of Solicitors of Banffshire.
