Herbert Poolman was born and lived in Codford and enlisted at Warminster. He originally served in the Army Service Corps before being transferred to the West Riding Regiment and thence, the Durham Light Infantry. Serving with the 2nd Battalion Durham Light Infantry, he was taken prisoner of war. He died in captivity on 27 August 1918. His name is commemorated on the P.O.W. Special Memorial at Valenciennes Commmunal Cemetery, Nord, France. He was the son of Mrs T. Poolman and husband of Mrs A. M. Poolman of Codford.
