John Edward Isaac Watson enlisted on 13 February 1905. With the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards he entered France on 6 October 1914. He was discharged on 12 August 1916 due to sickness and was awarded the Silver War Badge.

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, 1312pp. red cloth, inside front cover with presentation label, ‘..... To Private John Edward Watson 12044, 5th Batt. Grenadier Guards, who was disabled fighting in the Great War ...’; Princess Mary’s Christmas Tin 1914 (empty) with accompanying slip; two ‘bullet’pencils; named medal card box of issue; and slips to accompany the 1914 Star and ribbon.
