Charles William Cox was born in Ceylon on 1 December 1824 and baptised at St. Peter’s, Colombo on 13 February 1825. Educated at the Mission School, Madras, he was commissioned an Ensign in the Madras Army in March 1844, being posted to the 1st Madras Native Infantry. Promoted to Lieutenant in March 1846, he saw his first active service in the 2nd Burma War, 1852-53, being present at the retaking of Beeling, 9 April 1853. He served during the Indian Mutiny in the Central Indian campaign and in March 1859 was advanced to Captain. Promoted to Major in March 1864 and Lieutenant-Colonel in March 1870, he received the brevet of Colonel in March 1875. He retired with the honorary rank of Major-General in June 1875. He died at Nethway, Torquay on 14 August 1911. In his Will he bequeathed his medals to his nephew - Major-General Francis William Hamilton - the son of his sister Mary.
