William Godolphin Osborne was born on 29 March 1804, the son of Francis Godolphin Osborne, 5th Baron Osborne, later 5th Duke of Leeds. He was the great-great-great-grandson of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough. He was also the fourth cousin of Sir Winston Churchill's great-grandfather, George, 6th Duke of Marlborough.

As a Cornet in the 16th Lancers, Osborne served at the Siege of Bhurtpoor on the 17th and 18th of January 1826. Later he transferred to the 26th Foot (The Cameronians, or Scottish Rifles), and served with that Regiment during the First China War from the 5th of July, 1840 until the 29th of August, 1842.

The author of The Court & Camp of Runjeet Sing, 1840. Latterly, Lord Osborne of Tullalan Castle, Co. Kincardine. He died on 28 December 1888.
