James Bristow was born in Chatham on 30 August 1856. Entering the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer in May 1878. Served on
Beacon, January 1879-June 1883, awarded the Egypt Medal with clasp for Alexandria. Served on Turquoise, May 1884-November 1887; awarded for service in Burma. Attained the rank of C.E.R.A. in October 1890. Awarded the Royal Navy L.S. & G.C. in June 1916 when at President (London). Demobilised on 27 July 1919. With copied service paper.
