Thomas Beard Farncombe was born in Bishopstone, Sussex in July 1830. Taking the M.R.C.S. in 1851 and L.S.A. in 1852, he entered the Bengal Medical Establishment as an Assistant Surgeon on 20 February 1854, attained the rank of Surgeon-Major in 1873 and retired from the service on 16 February 1875. He served in the the Sonthal Insurrection of 1855-56 and in the Bhootan Campaign of 1865-66. He died at Worthing on 16 May 1923.
