India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, North West Frontier (2871. G A’ Dunk H.Ms 87th Regt.) note transposed service number and inverted comma after second initial but all officially impressed, contact marks, otherwise very fine and very scarce £300-400

Only 37 medals for ‘North West Frontier’ to the 87th Foot, all of whom were attached to the 70th Foot as part of the Sittana Field Force under Major-General Sir Sydney J. Cotton, K.C.B., 22 April to 5 May 1858.

George Arthur Dunk was at Tenterden, Kent, in 1830 and attested for the 39th Foot on 3 February 1847, aged 17 years (Regimental number 2781). He transferred to the 16th Foot in September 1847, and to the 87th Foot in April 1849. After service in the Indian Mutiny (Medal) and on the North West Frontier (Medal and Clasp) he again transferred, this time into the 5th Bengal European Cavalry, 1 April 1859, and was promoted to Regimental Sergeant Major on the same date. He subsequently volunteered for the British Army once again and joined the 20th Hussars as Regimental Sergeant Major on 19 February 1861, with whom he remained until his discharge on 5 April 1870. His discharge papers note that he was in possession of the Silver Medal and Annuity of £15 for long and meritorious service, and entitled to the Indian Mutiny Medal and the N.W. Frontier Medal.
