Army of India 1799-1826, 1 clasp, Nepaul (Capt. J. Johnson, 30th N.I.) short hyphen reverse, officially engraved naming in small capitals, with silver buckle on ribbon, minor edge bruise, good very fine £1600-1800

John Johnson (1781-1852) was the son of Richard and Elizabeth Johnson and was baptised at Walthamstow, Essex, 24 April 1781. Appointed a Cadet in H.E.I.C. service in 1800, he arrived in India on 30 September 1801, being ranked as an Ensign in September 1801 and advanced to Lieutenant in June 1802 and Captain in December 1814. Originally with the Bengal European Regiment, he was transferred to the 21st Native Infantry in 1804 and served in the Second Mahratta War. Transferred to the 30th Native Infantry in 1815, he served in the Nepaul War 1816, seeing service at Makwanpur where he was Captain of the 30th N.I. in the 4th Brigade Centre Column. Captain Johnson retired from the Bengal Army on 5 April 1820 and died in Bath on 9 April 1852. He is believed to be the author of A Journey from India to England, through Persia, Georgia, Poland and Prussia in 1817, published in 1818.
