Charles Cannings was born in Wilton, near Salisbury, Winchester. A Servant by occupation and a member of the 3rd Hampshire Regiment, he attested for full-time service in the Hampshire Regiment at Winchester on 11 March 1897, aged 18 years. He served in India, February 1899-February 1903 and Aden, February-November 1903. He was transferred to the Army Reserve in October 1904 and discharged on 10 March 1909. In the Great War, he served with the 10th Battalion Hampshire Regiment and entered the Balkan theatre of war on 9 September 1915. He was later transferred to Class ‘Z’ Reserve. With copied pre-WW1 service papers, roll extract confirming single A.G.S. clasp and m.i.c.
