Four: Leading Seaman R. J. Mace, Royal Navy

Richard James Mace was born in Great Yarmouth on 6 June 1879. He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 23 January 1896, being advanced to Boy 1st Class in October the same year. He was promoted to Ordinary Seaman in June 1897 when on Pembroke I; Able Seaman in August 1898 when on Repulse and Leading Seaman in December 1904 when on Dido. He served on Fame, December 1901-May 1902, seeing active service in China and the Boxer Rebellion. In March 1906 he left the Royal Navy and joined the R.F.R.; re-enrolling in 1911. Recalled to the Royal Navy in August 1914 he served as a Leading Seaman until invalided due to sciatica in August 1919.
