Jessie Alexander Maslin was born in Slough. A Tailor by occupation, he attested for the Grenadier Guards at Whitehall on 14 September 1893, aged 14 years. In March 1895 he was appointed a Drummer. With the Guards he served in Gibraltar, September-October 1899 and South Africa, October 1899-October 1902. Maslin was discharged on 13 September 1905.
