Three: Major D. T. Cruickshank, 2/Essex Regiment, dangerously wounded at Sanna’s Post when in command of the Burma Mounted Infantry

Duncan Thomas Cruickshank was appointed Sub-Lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion, Essex Regiment, on 12 February 1876, becoming Lieutenant exactly one year later, and promoted to Captain in August 1883. He served with the 2nd Battalion in the Nile Expedition in 1884-85 (Medal with clasp and Khedive’s Star). Promoted to Major in January 1895, he next served in the South African war in 1899-1902 with the 2nd Battalion, and took part in the operations in the Orange Free State, February to May 1900, including the actions at Poplar Grove and Driefontein. He commanded the Burma Mounted Infantry from 24th January to 31st March 1900, and was dangerously wounded at Sanna’s Post on 31 March 1900 (Mentioned in despatches, Medal with two clasps).

Sold with two original commissions as Sub-Lieutenant and Lieutenant.
