Herbert Joseph Martin was born on Ascension Island, As a Sick Berth Steward 2nd Class he was killed in action on the battlecruiser H.M.S. Indefatigable at the battle of Jutland, 31 May/1 June 1916. Aged 23 years at the time of his death, he was the son of William George and Susan J. Martin.
