A ‘North Caucasian Front’ Order of the Patriotic War 1st Class badge awarded to Lieutenant-Colonel G. D. Chainikov

Order of the Patriotic War, 1st Class, 2nd type, screw-backed badge, silver, gold and enamel, reverse numbered, ‘195409’, nearly extremely fine £300-360

The citation, dated 15 April 1944 reads: ‘In operations breaking through the defensive line of the enemy at Ak-Monaj Station, Krymskaya ACCP, 14th April 1944, Comrade Chainikov, heading a group of soldiers, performed bravely and resolutely, inspiring the soldiers to feats by his personal example. In a short but fierce fight, the group headed by Chainikov destroyed up to 120 Hitlerite soldiers and took over 150 Germans and Romanians prisoner. In that fight Comrade Chainikov personally shot 12 Hitlerites with a submachine gun.’

Georgy Dmitriyevich Chainikov was born in Odessa on 26 May 1911. He was commissioned a Lieutenant on 23 June 1941. Served on the North Caucasian Front, June 1941-April 1944. Heavily wounded in March 1942 and March 1943, and slightly wounded, August 1943, November 1943 and November 1944. Appointed Guards Captain in February 1945 and Major in June 1945. Attained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in December 1949 and transferred to the Reserve in June 1953.

Lieutenant-Colonel Chainikov was also awarded the Order of the Red Star and the Order of Alexander Nevsky in October 1943. With copied research which includes a copied photograph of the recipient
