B.E.M. London Gazette 10 April 1945: Sergeant, Durham Light Infantry. The recommendation states: ‘W/Sergeant William Tilley, 53 Searchlight Regiment R.A. This N.C.O. has been an Assistant Battle Instructor of his Troop for the past two years, during which time he has shown great devotion to duty both day and by night. He has been indefatigable in his efforts with regard to the training and his hard work allied to the undoubted ability and drive has gone far to make his particular Troop one of the most efficient and outstanding in 409 Searchlight Battery. His Troop has always shown considerable success both during exercises and against the enemy, which are entirely due to his enthusiasm and operational efficiency. His powers of organisation are of the highest order.’
