British War and Victory Medals (6866 Sjt., 2-3-S.A.I. Bde.) very fine and scarce (2) £20-30
Both medals issued by the British authorities, hence unilingual Victory Medal instead of the usual bilingual issue for South African troops. Whelan served as a Private in the 9th (Sportsman’s) Battalion, South African Infantry, in the German East African campaign from December 1915 to January 1917, and then re-enlisted with the East African Service Corps with the rank of Sergeant. Sold with his South African service record.
