John Crudgington was born in Bermondsay, Middlesex. A Brush Maker by occupation and a member of the 4th Battalion Essex Regiment, he attested for full-time service on 20 October 1890, aged 18 years. He served in South Africa, November 1899-April 1900 and again, March-October 1902. He was discharged having given notice on 20 June 1914. With copied service papers.
