Medals Related to Sports, Scotland, The Royal Hoolet Club, an engraved silver award medal, four men, one standing in the foreground wielding a shortened cricket-style bat about to strike a ball towards the other three, one ready to catch the ball, the others watching, reverse named (Won by Mr John Macfarlane 1858, Mr Jos. Sutherland 1859, Mr John Macfarlane 1860, Mr Andrew Ker Frier 1863, Mr James McIntosh 1864, Mr Charles Carey 1865…1866, Mr John Black 1867), rim engraved (Presented by Mr Joseph Sutherland to the Royal Hoolet Club, 1858), stamped with maker’s mark RM, 51mm. Extremely fine and attractive, a unique presentation medal; with ornate clip and ring for suspension (£200-300)

Despite exhaustive research, both vendor and cataloguer have been unable to obtain any further information on this medal, which would appear to have been awarded for a ‘singles’ contest of some sort and was, ironically, won by the presenter himself in 1859. Hoolet is Scottish dialect for a young owl
