Great Britain, The John Cobb Memorial Trophy, 1953, a plated bronze award medal by Spink for the British Racing Drivers Club, trophy, reverse legend, named (E.I. Appleyard, 1953), 58mm. Very fine and very rare; the first award of this annual prize and a significant piece of Jaguar-related history (£80-120)

Ernest Ian Appleyard (1923-98), from Linton, N. Yorkshire, was Britain’s foremost international rally driver in the immediate post-World War 2 period, competing almost exclusively in Jaguars – firstly in an SS100 model, registration LNW 100, then in one of six special lightweight XK120s, registration NUB 120, which became one of the most successful rally cars of all time. He won five Coupes des Alpes in 1948, 1950-1-2-3 and, together with wife Pat, whose father, Sir William Lyons, owned Jaguar Cars Ltd, he enjoyed successes on the Tulip, Monte Carlo and RAC rallies from 1951-3. Retiring from competition after finishing second in the 1956 RAC Rally Appleyard, who had represented Great Britain at ski-ing at the 1948 Winter Olympics, returned to help run the family business, Appleyard Jaguar, in Leeds. Extensive biographical details and a copy of Thoroughbred & Classic Cars, Sept. 2000, with a 10-page article and photographs of NUB 120 and the Appleyards, are sold with the lot
