Charles Edward Haynes was born on 8 July 1855. He was first commissioned, entering the Royal Engineers, on 28 January 1875. Served as a Lieutenant in the 2nd Company R.E. in the Zulu campaign of 1879, serving at the relief of Etshowe. He was the officer who effected the communications with Pearson’s force at Etshowe by means of heliostats. Haynes accompanied the 2nd Company in the march from the southern to the northern columns, and in the advance on Ulundi. For his services he was twice mentioned in despatches. Later served in the Bechuanaland expedition 1884-85. Attained the rank of Colonel in February 1907 and created a Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1911. Placed on Half Pay in May 1912 and Retired Pay in July 1912. Re-employed for the Great War, Colonel Haynes entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 24 November 1915. Post-war lived in Torquay.
