John William Nelson was born in Ryde, Isle of Wight. A Plumber by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as a Plumber’s Mate in February 1892, being promoted to Plumber whilst on Medea in November 1896. Served on Wallaroo, October 1899-December 1903, seeing service in China. Served on Egmont, February 1906-September 1907 during which time he received the Royal Navy L.S. & G.C. Pensioned ashore on 19 September 1914.
