An R.N. officer’s service jacket and related documentation appertaining to Commander M. F. R. Ainslie, D.S.O., D.S.C., Royal Naval Auxiliary Service, late Merchant Navy and Royal Navy, comprising the aforementioned tunic, by J. Baker & Co., Portsmouth, with named inside pocket label, and complete with medal ribands and sleeve rank insignia; together with Ainslie’s original “Crossing of the Line” certificate, issued aboard the S.S. Nasmyth on 28 December 1931, Certificate of Competency as Second Mate, dated 14 February 1935 and Certificate of Competency as Master, dated 1 May 1950, generally in good condition (Lot) £180-220

Michael Fredric Roberts Ainslie enjoyed a brilliant wartime career as a submariner, being awarded successively a “mention” for successful war patrols in the Terarch off Norway (London Gazette 6 September 1940 refers); the D.S.C. for like services in the Mediterranean (London Gazette 17 June 1941 refers); the D.S.O. for the destruction of the Italian submarine Velella in September 1943, while serving in the Shakespeare (London Gazette 23 November 1943 refers); the American Legion of Merit for services during the Sicily landings (London Gazette 24 October 1944 refers); and a Bar to his D.S.C. for further successful war patrols in the Far East in the Thrasher in the period January to August 1945 (London Gazette 20 November 1945 refers).
