Port of Plymouth Humane Society, bronze, reverse inscribed, ‘Port of Plymouth Humane Society awarded to S. N. Kendall for saving Private Eden, 18.8.15’, with bronze buckle on ribbon, extremely fine £250-300
A report, with photograph of the recipient, which appeared in The Western Weekly Mercury of 10 June 1916 reads, ‘Private Samuel N. Kendall, of Clarence Street, Plymouth, who has received the medal and certificate of the Royal Humane Society (sic) for effecting the rescue of Private Eden, who would otherwise have been drowned, while bathing from the beach at Wembury.’ Kendall served as a Driver in the Army Service Corps and was subsequently awarded the British War and Victory Medals.
