Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 1 clasp, Cape Colony (197883 W. R. Tremere, Boy 1Cl., H.M.S. Niobe) impressed naming, good very fine £120-160

William Richard Tremere was born in Deal, Kent on 25 September 1882. He entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on Impregnable on 17 January 1898, being advanced to Boy 1st Class in October 1898. He served on the cruiser Niobe, June 1899-October 1900, being promoted to Ordinary Seaman in September 1900. On 4 December 1899 the Niobe, together with Doris rescued troops from the S.S. Ismore which had run aground. Promoted to Able Seaman in February 1902 when on Renown. During the Great War he served on the cruiser Nottingham, April 1914-August 1916, seeing action at the battles of Heligoland Bight, Dogger Bank and Jutland. He was on board when the cruiser was sunk by the torpedoes of U.52 in the North Sea on 19 August 1916. He later served on the destroyer Vanoc, August 1917-February 1920. Was invalided from the service in July 1920.
