Crimea 1854-56, 4 clasps, Alma, Balaklava, Inkermann, Sebastopol (Lieut. P. R. Brooks, L.T.C.) privately impressed naming, contact marks and some edge bruising, about very fine £500-600

Phillip Richard Brooks was born c.1830. He enlisted under age at Winchester in 1843 for the Grenadier Guards and was appointed a Supernumerary Drummer. Appointed a Drummer in 1845, Drum Major in 1852 and Sergeant in May 1855. In December 1855 he was commissioned a Cornet in the Land Transport Corps. Served with the 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards at the battles of Alma, Balaklava and Inkermann; served with the Land Transport Corps at the siege of Sebastopol 1855. Brooks retired on Half Pay in 1857 and was appointed Quartermaster at Templemore Depot in 1858.

In 1858, Quartermaster Brooks wrote that he had ‘commanded a Treasure (?) Guard of a sergeant and 14 men in its march from the Black Sea to the Levant, a march unprecedented in the annals of history, I believe, since Xenophon and 10,000 Greeks traversed nearly the same countries.’

With copied attestation papers, roll extracts, and correspondence.
