William I (1066-1087), Penny, Profile Right type, Thetford, Esbern or Osbern, esbrnn on dtfr, 1.05g/9h (Harris –; Carson –; BMC –; N 847; S 1256). Slight crack at 1 o’clock and the surfaces a little marked, otherwise nearly very fine and believed the only known specimen £2,000-2,500

Esbern or Osbern is a known moneyer for Thetford in William I types 2 (BMC 150: Otbearn), 3 (BMC 214: Osbearn), 4 (BMC 278: Esbearn) and 5 (BMC 373: Esbern), covering the decade c. 1068-78. The present discovery coin extends his career into the 1080s
