César Auguste Franck (1822-1890), Belgian romantic composer and organist who studied at the Conservatoire in Paris from 1837-42; he settled permanently in Paris in 1844. He was the chief figure in a movement to give French music an emotional engagement, technical solidity and seriousness comparable to that of German composers
