Herbert George Mitchell was born in Maidstone, Kent. A Clerk by occupation and a member of the 3rd Battalion Norfolk Regiment, he attested for the Rifle Brigade on 5 February 1903, aged 20 years, 9 months, transferring to the Army Service Corps on 18 May 1904. He served in the British Expeditionary Force, arriving in France on 16 August 1914. On 5 March 1917 he was promoted to Staff Serjeant. For his wartime services he was mentioned in despatches and awarded the M.S.M. Returning home in October 1917, he was discharged to a commission in the Somerset Light Infantry on 27 March 1918 and retired with a gratuity in late 1920. Mitchell volunteered for service with the Royal Irish Constabulary in July 1921. On 5 May 1932 he was discharged from the Regular Army Reserve of Officers.
