Percival James Irwin de Carle was born in Islington, London, on 18 May 1885. A Clerk by occupation, he enlisted into the Royal Marines at London on 8 September 1903. He served on the pre-dreadnought battleship H.M.S. Venerable, October 1911-December 1916, serving off the Belgian coast in April 1915 and being advanced to Corporal in June 1916. Latterly serving at the Chatham Division H.Q., he was appointed an Acting Sergeant in September 1918. For his wartime services he was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War and Victory Medals and Meritorious Service Medal. He was discharged on a pension on reduction in September 1922. In 1950 De Carle was awarded the I.S.M. for his service as a Leading Examiner at the R.N.A.D., Priddy’s Hard, Gosport. With copied service paper and gazette extracts.
