Lieutenant George Anthony Woods was born in January 1871; commissioned into the 2nd Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers 4 April 1900, with the rank of Second Lieutenant; promoted to Lieutenant 5 September 1900; captured at Nooitgedacht 13 December 1900 whilst commanding a detachment of the Northumberland Fusiliers; released 15 December 1900.

During the Great War Woods served with the 2nd Battalion, Royal Munster Fusliers and Commanded ‘A’ Company at Etreux, being one of a handful of officers of the regiment to avoid being captured. Present at the action at Klein Zillebeke 11 November 1914; wounded the following month and returned to England where he served at the Royal Military College. Sold with photo from regimental journal.
