Lamplighter George Walker was born in Sheerness, Kent on 6 May 1858. He first entered the service as a Lamptrimmer aboard HMS Duke of Wellington on 2 December 1876 and transferred five days later to HMS Euphrates until drafted from her in May 1880. He served next aboard HMS Inconstant (1880-1882). Discharged to shore whilst still serving as a Lamptrimmer, 14 September 1882.
