Army of India 1799-1826, 1 clasp, Ava (Lieut. C. Danviere, Pioneers) short hyphen reverse, impressed naming, the obverse a little polished, therefore nearly very fine £450-550

Charles Davinier was born in London on 8 May, 1795, and received a Classical education at Belgrave House, Pimlico. He was nominated as a Cadet for the Madras Infantry in 1809 by Campbell Marjoribanks at the recommendation of John Crawford Esq., to whom his father was Steward. Danviere was admitted on Establishment in September 1811, and shared the prize captured in the war against the Pindarries and certain of the Mahratta States in 1817-18, as Lieutenant in the 15th Native Infantry. He was posted to do duty with the 1st battalion, Pioneers, on arrival at Rangoon in March 1824. He took part in the Burmese War and was present with Captain Ross’ detachment in his march from the Irrawaddy across the Pakary River range of Mountains to Aeng, being a distance of 125 miles which he accomplished in 12 days. Captain Ross says that the obstacles originally placed in the way by the enemy were soon “removed thro’ the exertions of the Pioneers under Lieut. Davinier.”
