Naval General Service 1793-1840, 1 clasp, Syria (John Bower, Asst. Surgn.) small edge bruise, otherwise good very fine £300-350

John Bower was Assistant Surgeon aboard H.M.S. Castor in the campaign of 1840 off the coast of Syria, including the bombardment of St Jean d’Acre. In the Wolverine he witnessed the closing operations of the War in China and the attack on the piratical settlement of Malladoo, on the island of Borneo, in August 1845. In the Curacoa he served in the Mediterranean and Black Sea, as Surgeon, from 1854 until 1857, and was present at the defence of Eupatoria and the capture of Kinburn. Doctor Bower received medals for Syria and the Crimea.
