George Henry Ring was born in East Ham, Woolwich, Essex. A Labourer by occupation and a member of the 4th Battalion Essex Regiment, he attested for one year’s service in the Essex Regiment at Hackney on 18 January 1900, aged 20 years, 2 months. With the 1st Battalion he served in South Africa, March 1900-June 1901. He was discharged on 16 August 1901. During the Great War he served in the Army Service Corps.
