Edgar Arthur Dessent was born in Suffolk. A Butcher by occupation, he attested for the Cavalry at London on 16 November 1889, aged 19 years, 4 months. Posted to the 21st Hussars, he served in India, December 1890-February 1895. In September 1896 he was transferred to the Army Reserve. Recalled to army service in December 1899, he posted to the 17th Lancers and despatched to South Africa, serving there, February-December 1900. He was discharged at the termination of his period of service on 15 July 1902. During the Great War he served as a Warrant Officer 2nd Class with the Buckinghamshire Yeomanry and the Labour Corps. With copied attestation papers and m.i.c.
