George Angledew was born in Knaresborough, Yorkshire. A giant of a man, six feet eleven inches tall, he was a shoemaker before enlisting for the 61st Regiment in December 1803. He was present at the battle of Maida in July 1806, for which battle only 24 clasps were issued to the regiment, and subsequently served in the Peninsular War. He was wounded in action at the battle of the Nivelle on 10 November 1813, as a result of which he had his left thumb amputated. He was consequently discharged at Villa Franca, France, in January 1814, and invalided to England the following month. The muster rolls for the period June to September 1812 also show this man as having been wounded at Salamanca. It is interesting to note that he was disallowed, or did not claim, the clasp for Nivelle. Sold with copy discharge papers.
