Walter John Hancock was born in Bath, Somerset and enlisted at Bath, serving initially as Private 19642 in the Somerset Light Infantry. Serving with the 7th Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers, he was killed in action on 9 September 1916. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
