George Coutts Rennie was born in Aberdeenshire on 4 April 1908. Entering the Army, he served with the Gordon Highlanders, 1928-1935, serving mostly in India. Transferred to the Army Reserve, he was recalled for service in Palestine in 1936, serving for 88 days with the West Yorkshire Regiment. On the outbreak of war he re-enlisted and serving with the Gordon Highlanders he was captured at St. Valery-en-Caux together with other men of the 1st Battalion, being part of the 51st Highland Division. He was held as a prisoner-of-war at Stalag 20B at Marienburg.
