Five: Chief Petty Officer S. Card, Royal Navy

1939-45 Star; Atlantic Star; Africa Star, clasp, North Africa 1942-43; War Medal 1939-45; Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., G.VI.R., 1st issue (JX. 127509 S. Card, C.P.O., H.M.S. Appledore), mounted as worn, generally good very fine (5) £160-180

Sidney Card was mentioned in despatches for his services as a Leading Seaman in H.M.S. Bedouin at the 2nd Battle of Narvik (London Gazette 28 June 1940 refers). The destroyer Bedouin was subsequently engaged on the Arctic run prior to her loss in the Mediterranean during the Malta convoy “Harpoon” on 15 June 1942, on which occasion Card was taken P.O.W.

Badly hit and damaged during an engagement against two Italian cruisers and five destroyers off Pantelleria, the
Bedouin was taken in tow by her consort the Partridge, but the tow had to be parted when the Italian squadron returned, and she finally fell victim to an aerial torpedo attack.

Her captain and 208 survivors were picked up by the Italians; see
A Dictionary of Disasters at Sea for further details.
