Three: Ship’s Corporal A. Lynden, Royal Navy

Arthur Lynden was born in Devonport in August 1838 and entered the Royal Navy as as a Boy 2nd Class in January 1854. Joining H.M.S. Cornwallis in February 1855, aboard which ship he qualified for his Baltic Medal and was advanced to Ordinary Seaman, he removed to the Shannon in August 1856. Subsequently engaged with Captain Peel’s “Bluejackets” in the Indian Mutiny, when he was present in the Naval Brigade’s memorable actions at Lucknow, Lynden gained appointment as a Ship’s Corporal in the ‘new system of Naval Police’ in December 1862 (official correspondence refers). He was finally pensioned ashore in August 1876, after being awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in June of the previous year.
