John Wilfred Underwood was born and lived in Altofts and enlisted at York. He formerly served in the Royal Horse Guards. Serving in the Household Battalion, he was killed in action on 12 October 1917. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
